2017… wow what can I say. In only our second year of existence the Smofried BBQ company grew in ways that only I believed possible in 12 very short months. It literally feels like just yesterday I was writing this very year end synopsis for 2016 in between trying to figure out the private label market. Speaking of private labels, I must say that was the crowning achievement of the year. We got our products out on the market faster than any other business objective I’ve ever been a part of. That’s not to say that the bulk of the work is not still ahead of us. It’s more of a self inflicted pat on the back, if even for just a quick moment. The journey and the process were full of learning curves, trials, tribulations and unanswered phone calls. It was however rewarded with a trademark registration, a business registration, a bank account and a GTIN universal product code.
It seemed like every month brought about significant growth in multiple areas of the business. And it became just that, a business!
-BBQ Brisket Rub
The mid-summer afforded us the opportunity to finally see our BBQ Brisket Rub hit the open market. After seven months of meticulous planning and strategy building we finally received our very first shipment of our very own product. This was certainly a major milestone for the Smofried BBQ company as we were able to physically spread our gospel further than we would have any other way.
-St. Patrick’s Day Parade
This year started off with a super strong showing at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We owe so many thank you’s to the good folks down at the Outlook Inn for allowing us to set up outside of the bar on a few occasions this year. In particular the St. Patty’s Day Parade was a very uncertain event but we went with our guts and we got out there and braved the cold wet weather and came away with a solid win for the Smofried BBQ company.
-Kentucky Derby Burger Contest
Speaking of solid wins, a few days later we showed up at our second Kentucky Derby Burger contest and won for the second year in a row. Truthfully, I knew from the very first time I coated that burger patty in Kona Coffee and Cocoa Powder I had a legitimate contender. And on another note of honesty, I really felt this burger was at least a little bit better than the one we won with in 2016!
2017 presented a number of catering opportunities for the Smofried BBQ company. I’m very thankful for each and every opportunity regardless of how large or small it was. Anytime that we have the opportunity to share our BBQ with people we don’t personally know it’s a win for the brand and the culture that we’re driving to build!
-Big Green EGGfests
Much like last year we had the chance to participate in a couple of Big Green EGGfests. Only difference is in 2017 we took the show on the road. Though it was only a little over ah hour North we were still thrilled at the prospect of sharing some of the things we loved with great folks in Indianapolis.
The month of September typically marks the beginning of a number of outdoor Fall festivals in and around Louisville, Ky. Luckily for the Smofried BBQ company we were able to participate in the Highland’s Festival for the very first time. This day proved to be our most lucrative single day to date. As we stood there serving up #BBQtacos it seemed like our line never subsided for any of the 10 hours that we were out there serving.
-BBQ Hog Rub + BBQ Bird Rub
The fourth quarter kicked off strong with the release of our BBQ Hog and BBQ Bird Rubs. Getting both of them on the market served as a culmination of a full calendar’s worth of research, testing and implementation. If you would have told me that we would have a full product line available within 12 months I’m not sure that I would’ve believed it. It’s certainly true that anything can be accomplished with a good deal of vision and persistence!
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the continued support. We look forward to fulfilling your continued expectations into the new year. If you are reading this we are truly lucky and thankful to have your interest and support.
Here’s to only imagining what 2018 has in store for the Smofried BBQ company…
Happy New Year!
