It wasn’t but two years ago I recall having a high sense of amazement at myself for smoking 40 pounds of Boston Butt at one time. Nowadays it seems like I blow that amount out food of the water on just about a weekly basis. 2016 proved to be the biggest year of my culinary journey. From winning the Kentucky Derby Burger contest to catering two large events to serving food out of my own pop up BBQ stand last year was been nothing short of amazing.
If you’ve known me for more than a month then there’s a good chance you know how much passion I have for BBQ. It was just about a year ago when I decided that I wanted to act upon my passion for BBQ a little bit more. One really late night in early January I sat in my office brainstorming ideas about how this blog would look and what the purpose of it would be. I had absolutely no idea what all was in store for the next 12 months.
It all snowballed in March with the Kentucky Derby Burger contest. On a whim I entered the contest and to my surprise I ended up winning. Talk about a way to kick off a brand new BBQ blog. From there I started getting inquiries from relatives and friends for medium sized catering deals. Over the summer I found myself really pushing my culinary capabilities and conjuring up all sorts of creative takes on traditional dishes from each corner of the world.
As the Summer wound down I found myself cooking in my very first live cooking event, the Brownsboro Hardware Big Green Eggiest. Again, another wonderful experience full of great people and great food. Though my Scotch Eggs didn’t win first place at the event I will say that it was probably the most exhilarating and rewarding experience of my life to be surrounded by so many people who love to eat and love to cook even more than I do myself.
Right as the Fall kicked off I had the pleasure of serving BBQ tacos and pulled pork sandwiches at a local haunted house for seven straight weekends. This experience was nothing short of amazing for me as it capped off an already amazing year for myself and the Smofried brand. There’s a special feeling that comes over one when you see the effects that the food that you’ve prepared for them truly touches them on this inside.
After my very first sales experience I must say that I cannot wait until the Spring of 2017 gets here so that I can get out and sell more BBQ. Interacting with complete strangers by way of BBQ is one of the most gratifying experiences that I’ve had the pleasure of feeling in my lifetime.
It’s surreal to reflect on the past 12 months and reflect on the fact that I did not plan for any of this to happen. To say that 2016 was an amazing year for Smofried would be a great understatement. Not only was it a great year it was more importantly our first year of, well… everything!
There’s a warm feeling that comes over me whenever I witness the effects that the food that I’ve prepared for someone truly touches them on this inside. With that said, if you’ve ever tasted my BBQ and had anything nice to say about it, thank you. Thank you for the support and I cannot wait to show you what I have in store for 2017!
Happy New Year
